Co-Signature Rule Change
by Ron Pace, PA-C

The co-signature rule in the Florida Administrative Code has been officially changed. The rule was changed after much negotiation bewtween the Florida Academy and the Board of Medicine. Representatives from the Florida Medical Association and the Florida Osteopathic Medical Association agreed on the proposed change, and after going thru the proper administrative procedures for rule change it has finally been adopted and published on 11/17/03.

Essentially it states in the FAC 64B8-30.012 (3) now that all tasks and procedures performed by the physician assistant must be documented in the appropriate medical record. During the initial six months of supervision of each physician assistant all documentation by the physician assistant in a medical record must be reviewed, signed and dated by a supervising physician within seven days. Subsequent thereto, a supervising physician must review, sign and date all documentation by a physician assistant in medical charts within 30 days.

Here is a copy of that section of the FAC with the exact wording if you need documentation for anyone who questions the rule change.
