In this position, Leinweber will report to the AAPA Board of Directors and will oversee all operations of the Academy, including fiscal oversight; provide strategic leadership to the Board of Directors; and incorporate tactical implementation of strategies for the organization. “We are confident that the AAPA Board of Directors has chosen an innovative leader who understands the complexities and dynamic nature of health care in our nation,” said Mary Ettari, chair of the AAPA Board of Directors and head of the EVP Search Committee. “Bill Leinweber’s experience in the health and research arenas and his relationships with leaders in government, industry, philanthropy, academia, associations, and health care will be a perfect fit for AAPA. He will be an articulate advocate for the profession, and I am personally delighted that he will join AAPA leaders as the PA profession continues to impact the delivery of health care in the future.”

In eight years at Research!America, Leinweber’s responsibilities have included the development and execution of education and advocacy programs, legislative and public affairs programs, membership and development operations, and strategic planning for the organization.

“I am honored to have been chosen to serve as executive vice president of the American Academy of Physician Assistants,” said Leinweber. “As momentum builds toward a new health care paradigm for the nation, it is critical that the physician-PA team be strongly positioned as an optimal solution to the many challenges facing our health care system. I look forward to building on established successes and continuing to pursue AAPA strategic initiatives, including strengthening and enhancing the physician assistant profession.”

“We are extremely pleased with the selection of Bill Leinweber as the new EVP/CEO,” said AAPA President Gregor Bennett. “Mr. Leinweber received unanimous support from the AAPA Board of Directors. We are confident of his capability and look forward to his leadership for years to come.”

Leinweber holds a master’s degree from The Ohio State University in human resource management and organizational development and a bachelor’s degree from Marshall University.

Leinweber comes with extensive work experience in health-related association management. Prior to Research!America, he held executive positions over 11 years with the American Heart Association and was among the founding management team of The Campaign for Tobacco-Free Kids, the nation’s largest private initiative to reduce tobacco use and addiction by changing public attitudes and public policies on tobacco. He is a member of several professional organizations, including the American Society of Association Executives, the Association of Fundraising Professionals, and the Professional Association for Healthcare Philanthropy.
