We continue to hear rumors and reports of legally written prescriptions by PAs being denied approval by various insurance carriers and not being filled by the pharmacist. It delays the patient getting the medications they need in a timely manner, and is putting the PA profession in a unfair position and it just plain makes us look bad in the eyes of our patients. It maligns and impunes our professional credibility and borders on defamation. I hope this is as upsetting to you as it is to me.

FAPA can do something about this, but we need more than "rumors and reports". We need written documentation of when this occurs and specifics of the denial. It is illegal and can be addressed by the State Department of Insurance (DOI). It happened several years ago and we provided information to the DOI and the Commissioner sent strongly worded letters to the offending companies and told them to cease and desist from such illegal practice.

If your patient's prescription is denied, help us to help you. Simply click on the "PRESCRIPTION DENIAL REPORT FORM" link on the homepage and it will bring you to this article to remind you of the information we need. We will use the Comments Form to assist us. Complete the identification information portion of the form so that we can contact you if we have questions about your report.

In the Comments section, include the date of the occurrence, the pharmacy, the insurance company, and a brief single sentence as to why the prescription was denied approval for filling. If you have written letters from the pharamcy or insurance company please fax copies of these as well.

The forms completed online will automatically go to the FAPA office. There is also a form that you can print and fax to the FAPA office if you so prefer. FAPA will send these reports to the Department of Insurance through our Legislative Consultants in Tallahassee requesting that appropriate action be taken to require the insurance companies to comply with Florida law in filling legally written prescriptions by physician assistants.

The ability of the Academy to assist in such matters is just another reason ALL physician assistants who practice in Florida should be members of the Florida Academy. If you are a non-member submitting this form requesting our assistance to help protect your practice rights in matters such as this - you need to join the Academy today! Go to the Membership tab on the homepage and you can submit your membership application online NOW. Thank you.
