PA Mentoring List

This listing is provided as a service to our membership. At a recent leadership conference it was felt that many of our younger, less experienced colleagues might benefit from the experience of having a mentor as they start out in their careers.

Mentoring is where a more experienced individual provides support, guidance and assistance to a younger novice, or protégé. New graduates especially may benefit from having an experienced PA that they can call on for advice on how to handle situations with which they are not sure what to do, or having someone they can call and talk to about the PA profession or FAPA matters. One on one mentoring programs have been shown to increase the success of the protégé and enhance the mentor’s practice.

The relationship between a mentor and protégé is a unique one, and each must feel comfortable with the other recognizing the need for privacy, confidentiality, and the trust required of such a relationship. One or two conversations or meetings with each other may be necessary before agreement is accepted to begin such a relationship.

For more information on mentoring and what is expected in a mentoring relationship we have provided a copy of the AAPA Guide on Mentoring for each to review. While this guide is used for more formal mentoring programs, it has a great deal of useful information for those who wish to serve as a mentor and we strongly suggest you read the guide prior to agreeing to serve as a mentor. Those who seek a mentor should read it as well in order to know what to expect. Click here to open that guide and review online or print a copy (AAPA_Mentoring_Guide.pdf).
