Categories Of Membership
1. Fellow Members
Members of the AAPA
who meet requirements for certification by the Agency for Health Care Administration or
its successor agency. This category shall include those Physician Trained Assistants
(PTAs) who are graduates of a Committee on Allied Health Education and Accreditation
(CAHEA) approved program or its successor agency. Fellow members may, vote, hold office,
serve on or chair committees, have privileges of the floor and receive publications and
discounts.
2. Associate Members
Individuals who
qualify for AAPA Fellow membership, and who meet requirements for certification by the
Agency for Health Care Administration or its successor agency who elect to not become a
member of the AAPA. Associate members may vote (on all matters except those pertaining to
the AAPA), may not hold office, may serve on or chair committees, have privileges of the
floor and receive publications and discounts.
3. Affiliate Members
Medical Graduates
Physician Assistants (MG-PA) who have successfully completed the state administered
Physician Assistant Certification Examination. These members may vote (on all matters
except those pertaining to the AAPA), may not hold office, may serve on or chair
committees, do have privileges of the floor, receive publications and discounts.

4. Student Members
Students enrolled in
a CAHEA or successor agency-approved Physician Assistant program or a program actively
seeking accreditation. that is affiliated with a Florida university or college of
medicine. These individuals may not vote or hold office. The student members may serve on
but may not chair an appointed committee except as the chair of the Student Affairs
Committee. The student members do not have floor privileges. Notwithstanding the preceding
statement, the chair of the Student Affairs Committee shall sit on the FAPA Board of
Directors and have one (1) vote on issues before the Board that pertain to Chapter
business only and may not vote on matters that pertain to AAPA. They may receive
publications and discounts. (02-08-96) . This
membership shall be extended for six months after graduation in order that the member may
take the National Boards.
5. Honorary Members
Persons of
distinction who have rendered outstanding service to the Academy. Honorary membership may
be conferred by a majority vote of the BOD. These members shall be exempt from payment of
dues.
1. Physician Assistant Honorary members
shall have all of the rights and privileges of Fellow members.
2. Non-Physician Assistant Honorary
members shall not vote, hold office, serve on or chair committees. They do have privileges
of the floor and receive publications and discounts.
6. Military Members
Restricted to full
time active duty military Physician Assistants. These members that otherwise qualify for
Fellow membership in the Academy shall enjoy all the rights and privileges of Fellow
membership. Otherwise these members shall not vote, hold office, serve on or chair
committees (except in an advisory capacity). They do have privileges of the floor and
receive publications and discounts.
7. Hardship Members
Individuals who
qualify for Fellow membership but whose special circumstances make payment of dues an
unreasonable hardship. The BOD will review petitions for this membership on an individual
basis. Cause for petition may include, but is not restricted to, service in the Peace
Corps, missionary health practice, illness, injury or medical disability. These members
may vote, hold office, serve on or chair committees, have privileges of the floor, receive
publications and discounts.
8. Corporate Members
Pharmaceutical companies or other medically oriented groups or institutions (individuals
within these organizations are encouraged to join as Friendship members). These members
may not vote, hold office, serve on or chair committees (except in an advisory capacity),
do not have privileges of the floor, but do receive publications and discounts. (04-01-93)
9. Friendship Members
Non Physician
Assistant individuals not representing any business or corporate entity who wish to
associate with the Florida Academy of Physician Assistants. These members shall not vote,
hold office, or serve on or chair an appointed committee except in an advisory capacity.
They do not have floor privileges and they may receive publications with the exception of
membership directory and the JOB. Any general membership mailing and/or membership direct
contact shall be administered through the FAPA Executive Director. A business or
corporation that misrepresents itself as an individual or participates in unauthorized
mailings, contacts, or endorsements to FAPA members shall result in an immediate
termination of membership with FAPA. This said termination would require a review by the
Board of Directors before renewal of membership. Friendships are eligible for discounts.
10. Physician Members
Physicians who
are licensed to practice in the USA who wish to associate with the Academy. These members
may not vote, or hold office. They may serve on but not chair committees, have privileges
of the floor and receive publications and discounts.
11. Retired Physician Assistant Members
Fellow Physician Assistants, 55 years of age and older, who have retired from practice
and are not working as a physician assistant in a full-time or part-time paid position as a
physician assistant.
12. Such other members as
shall be decided by the BOD.
