CONTROLLED SUBSTANCES COURSE REGISTRATION

Please also note that at this time, the course is not open to FAPA student membersThe CME certificate credits will be given to fellow, associate, and affiliate members only since the course is a state requirement upon licensure renewal, and the CME credit would not be accepted (as students are not yet a Florida licensed PA).

This course qualifies for three continuing medical education credits (CMEs), and includes the following modules:

  1. General history of drug abuse in the United States;
  2. Review of medication class, pharmacology, side effects, and prescribing guidelines for psychotherapeutic medications and Schedule II and Schedule III opioid medications
  3. A review of addiction, chemical dependency, tolerance, and drug-seeking behavior
  4. A summary of what to do when prescription abuse is detected, including techniques for identifying drug-seeking behavior, dealing with drug-seeking patients, and resources for patients seeking recovery assistance.

Offered in this online format, the course is available 24/7 to participants. Physician Assistants who are delegated the authority to prescribe controlled substances will not see an increase in their overall hours of CMEs required, but they must take three (3) of the ten (10) hours in a course about the safe prescribing of controlled substances.

The course is sponsored by Physicians for PA Continuing Education, Inc., (PPACE) as a three-hour course, in compliance with Florida Statutes, Chapter 458, regarding the safe prescribing of controlled substances. PPACE is an approved provider of Continuing Medication Education (CME) by the American Academy of Physician Assistants (AAPA). Successful completion of the post-test is required to earn AAPA Category 1 CME credit. Successful completion is defined as watching all three components of the course, completing the course survey, and attaining a cumulative score of at least 70 percent correctUpon successful completion of this course, licensed Florida Physician Assistants will receive a certificate of completion via email for 3.0 hours of Continuing Medical Education. This Controlled Substances Prescribing Course has been submitted to the American Academy of Physician Assistants for approval of three (3) Category I CME hours for enduring material.
