The Florida Academy of Physician Assistants recognizes Tampa Bay Area Physician Dr. Allen Finkelstein with the Physician of the Year award.Dr. Finkelstein is Board Certified in Family Practice. He received his medical degree from West Virginia School of Osteopathic Medicine and after completing his internship at SunCoast Hospital in Largo, Florida he opened a private medical practice.  Dr. Finkelstein is a member of the American College of Osteopathic Family Physicians, the Pinellas County Osteopathic Medical Society, the American Osteopathic Association, and the Florida Osteopathic Medical Association. He received the Physician of the year award from the Pinellas County Osteopathic Medical Society in 2004.  He has practiced family medicine in the Clearwater Florida area for nearly 40 years.  In 2016, he was awarded with a "Lifetime Achievement Award" from Pinellas County Osteopathic Medical Society”.

He recently announced his retirement from clinical practice. He has been a strong advocate of Florida PAs and the PA Profession for several years. He has lobbied in favor of PA legislation to his state medical society (FOMA) and called legislators in favor of PA legislative bills. Most recently, Dr. Finkelstein became a charter member and the first President of PPACE (Physicians for PA Continuing Education), an organization that has helped spearhead efforts to get controlled substance course education to PAs in our state following the recent change in statute. Dr. Finkelstein has been an advocate of the profession for decades and hopes that his latest efforts with PPACE will further enhance PA Continuing Education opportunities and help PAs better reach patients in need our state.

When asked about Dr. Finkelstein, Past President Eric Smith (Largo, FL) made the following statement:

“I have worked for Dr. Finkelstein since 2001, the year I was also his PA student. He has been incredibly supportive of our profession's endeavors throughout that time and was also a key inspirational voice helping to ignite my own leadership interests in the Academy early on.. I am proud to call Dr. Finkelstein not only a boss, but a mentor, a father figure and a friend. I believe he truly deserves this award from our Academy.

Upon informing Dr. Allen Finkelstein of the FAPA decision to name him Physician of the year, he volunteered the following statement:

“First of all, I am not at all sure that I deserve an award from FAPA, but I certainly appreciate the contribution of PAs to patient care.  I believe the future of healthcare delivery lies in the team approach, involving Physicians, Physician Extenders, Nurses, therapists and various paramedical professionals.  Considering the profession’s excellent academic curriculum and hands-on training program, I see the Physician Assistant uniquely qualified to fit the healthcare team approach.   For the past 16 years, I have worked with Eric Smith PA, one of the finest healthcare professionals that I have ever encountered.  I believe the PA profession is truly in good hands. “
