Dear PAs and PA Students,

Happy New Year to you all! Did you make any New Year resolutions? How many? What’s different this year?

As I reflect back on 2017 and plan for 2018, I don't think of resolutions with the beginning of the legislative session but rather what can FAPA achieve in the state of Florida this session? What must we defend? Below is a report of Legislative week #1.

The Academy is busy advocating for and against changes to Florida Law. At this time, roughly 1,600 substantive bills have been filed.

Some of FAPA’s priorities are as follow:

  • Support bills that give PAs the express authority to initiate the Baker Act and sign forms/authorizations in the stead of our supervising physicians. PAs already have the authority to initiate the Baker Act, but these bills would make this ability more concrete.

  • Support bills that make “texting and driving” a primary offense.

  • Oppose efforts by foreign and out-of-state schools to amend currently filed bills in an attempt to create alternate pathways to licensure.

  • Support Florida consumers and patients by supporting legislation that disallows the retroactive denial of claims and improves the prior authorization process.

There are many other legislative priorities that FAPA is supporting, so please watch for our next legislative updates featured on social media.
