President's Message

July 1st, 2020

Welcome Message from New FAPA President Gregory Burns!

To my Fellow PAs and PA students:

My name is Gregory (Greg) Burns, PA-C. I have been a certified and State of Florida-licensed PA for over 15 years. Today (July 1st) marks the first day of my presidency for the Florida Academy of PAs (FAPA). I am truly humbled and honored to be elected by you last year for this wonderful privilege. Thank you again!

Some of you know that this is my second tenure at this important position having been President of FAPA just over 10 years ago. Knowing this, you may ask yourself why I decided to be in this position again. Well, there are several reasons but two of them are extremely important goals that I would like to share with you now.

The first goal involves autonomy and parity. As you know, FAPA has had a bill involving autonomy for experienced primary care PAs for the past few years. This past March, PAs were excluded from this important Bill (HB 607) and APRNs were included with various restrictions. Starting today, this Bill became law allowing some of these experienced APRNs to be autonomous within primary care.

In my humble opinion, our profession needs this action to happen for us too. We need this to happen now and certainly instituted at the next legislative session (March-May 2021). As you all know, healthcare has evolved in so many ways over the past decade but even more so during this tragic Covid-19 crisis. PAs have lost many jobs/administrative positions or even a considerable amount of hours during this pandemic. Many have had to find other PA jobs in other states in order to support themselves and their families. I believe having autonomy for PAs would have created more jobs or opportunities for PAs across this state. We need parity with these other healthcare professionals so our profession can thrive and continue to be productive clinicians for our patients of Florida.

The second goal is to create transparency within our organization and to provide clear and concise communication to all of our members. It is my hope that improved transparency and communication will lead to new PA leaders within our organization and profession. We need new leadership with seasoned PAs and with our PA students/graduates.

In the coming weeks, FAPA will be transparent and communicative in sharing ideas and avenues to achieve both of these goals in a timely and efficient manner. However, FAPA needs your urgent assistance with successfully attaining these big goals. To be frank, we need all PAs and PA students to be members of FAPA, contribute to our political action committee (PAC), and reach out to all of the Florida legislators about our future goals/bills.

To become a member or to contribute to the PAC, please go to our website at For more information on becoming a leader within our profession here in Florida or learning how to reach out to your legislators, please reach me at my below email address.

I also invite you to the upcoming 2020 FAPA Summer Symposium at the JW Marriott Marco Island Beach Resort on September 30 thru October 4th! I was recently there with the Education Committee. The Resort and FAPA have taken numerous measures to ensure a safe environment for all attendees during these Covid-19 times. More news to follow soon. Registration for this conference can be found at this website:

Please stay tuned via email and social media soon for more details on these exciting times for FAPA and our PA profession.

Our FAPA Team will fight for these goals and more! Join us now to continue this fight! Let’s make this year be the best year for our profession!

Have a safe and restful Independence Day Weekend!
