The Department of Health/Board of Osteopathic Medicine have proposed rules to substantially reword Rule 64B15-14.005.   The new rule is intended to implement the legislative mandate set forth in the newly enacted Section 456.44, F.S., with regard to the standards for the prescribing of controlled substances for the treatment of acute pain by physicians and PAs.Comments are due by 11/29/18 and may be submitted using the first hypertext link provided above.

The Agency for Health Care Administration amended Rule 59A-3.272, its regulation relevant to health facility and agency licensing to clarify language, change a phrase to align with statute, and expand protection to additional licensed professionals considered for the governing board.  PAs were specifically added to the list of additional licensed professionals.  The new rule becomes effective  on 11/21/18.

FAPA Celebrates PA Week 2017

What is PA Week?

Each year from October 6-12, we celebrate National PA Week, which recognizes the PA profession and its contributions to the nation’s health. The week is also an opportunity to raise awareness and visibility of the profession. Before it was a weeklong event, National PA Day was first celebrated on October 6, 1987, in honor of the 20th anniversary of the first graduating class of PAs from the Duke University PA program. October 6 is also the birthday of the profession’s founder, Eugene A. Stead, Jr., MD. Now the profession is 50 years strong! See how PAs across the state celebrated this year!

The University of Florida PA Program had a very eventful PA week filled with service projects, themed days, and other festivities. Some of the events included making breakfast at the Ronald McDonald House, donating 50 stuffed animals in honor of the 50th PA anniversary to UF Health Stands Pediatric ER, having the FAPA president speak at our Pre-PA club, and raising $525 for the displaced Barry St. Croix students!

We also had themed days such as twin day, pay it forward day, "on Wednesdays PAs wear pink" for breast cancer awareness, and a PA faculty panel where we all wore our PA week shirts that we designed.

FAPA in Dade County Finished PA week off with a Bang! Over 100 bike helmets were donated to children and bike safety was discussed with kids and parents. The event was held at Longhorn Steakhouse and there were balloons, face-painting and other giveaways from the restaurant. FAPA Celebrates September 2016 Service Month in Miami Dade County

FAPA volunteered at Born Free Pet Shelter, a no-kill dog rescue shelter in South Miami. Every couple of weeks, groups from South Florida would help clean up the property, clean the kennels, and of course, play with dogs!

FAPA also raised money for the Lotus House, as well as collected formulas and diapers. Lotus House is a shelter dedicated to improve the lives of homeless women and children. Halloween costumes were also collected for Holtz Children's Hospital in Miami.
